"It is quite clear to me that the full potential of computational biology for cancer research is only achieved if it is deeply integrated into a research program that involves experimental and clinical expertise/resources. This enhances the opportunities for both basic scientific discoveries and translational research. Therefore, one of my major goals in the last few years was to strength the interaction of my group with other groups focused on experimental and clinical approaches. Fortunately, that was possible both within our LICR branch (with the group led by Anamaria Camargo) and outside the branch (with several groups in Brazil and worldwide)." (Sandro José de Souza - Group Leader)

Since the establishment of the group in 1998, we have been involved in many large-scale projects in the era of genomics and transcriptomics. Please see "Publications" for a complete list of our contributions. A crucial component of the group activities is our interaction with the Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Genomics, led by Anamaria Camargo. Together, both groups have excellent expertise and resources in genomics and bioinformatics. The emergence of the next-generation sequencing technologies represents an opportunity to use such expertise and resources and expand some of our projects. Furthermore, we have a solid interaction with a clinical group from the Hospital Oswaldo Cruz led by Dr. Angelita and Joaquim Gama and have established a gastro-intestinal tumor bank.
